Position: Clerk (Open)

JOB TITLE:  Library Clerk JOB SUMMARY:   Under  the direction and supervision of the Library Director and/or Assistant Library Director, the Library Clerk  performs routine clerical library tasks. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  This list provides an overview for the position but is not limited to the items presented.  The successful candidate is expected to perform other work related duties as required.
  1. Staff  Responsibilities
    1. Opens and closes library when scheduled
    2. Works hours as scheduled including Saturday
    3. Performs janitorial duties as needed
  2. Circulation Duties
    1. Starting and shutting down circulation computer
    2. Checking materials in and out
    3. Renewing materials in person or by phone requests
    4. Printing overdue notices
  3. Serving Patrons
    1. Assists in locating requested materials
    2. Demonstrates knowledge of and assists in the use of reference sources
    3. Helps answer reference questions by phone or in person
    4. Telephones to inform patrons of overdue items
    5. Collects overdue fines from patrons
    6. Helps with Story Time and reading program
    7. Provides information on library activities, facilities, rules and services
    8. Supervises and monitors patrons computer usage
  4. Organizational Duties
    1. Shelves all types of materials
    2. Shelf reads and straightens (while shelving and at other times as needed)
  5. Clerical/Creative Duties
    1. Assists in processing new materials for circulation (books, audio-visual, periodicals)
    2. Repairs damaged library materials
    3. Assists in examining materials to be selected, replaced or discarded
    4. Plans and carries out special projects such as library displays or promotion
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:  16 years or older by July 31 SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  The following skills and abilities are necessary for this position but are not limited to those stated.  The successful candidate will be expected to perform additional related work as required.
  1. Knowledge of  basic library practices and reference tools
  2. Ability to learn assigned duties
  3. Ability to alphabetize accurately
  4. Ability to deal effectively and tactfully with the public, including children
  5. Willingness to work and follow directions
  6. Ability to perform well with or without direct supervision
  7. Able to routinely work evenings and weekends as scheduled; and to fill in for coworkers when necessary
  8. Keyboarding skills, including the ability to type accurately
